Best Educational Shows for Young Children that are Entertaining
Truth be told, I am not a fan of screen time. As a child, I watched too much TV (imo) and therefore, as an adult have a complex against watching tv or being on tablets. Its a bummer for my kids, ha! That being said, I worked hard to get passed this complex and compromised with educational television shows where my boys actually learn something rather than just mindless television.
Here is a list of some of our top shows that my boys like to watch and that are secretly educational too! Don’t get me wrong, they also watch Paw Patrol, Grizzly and the Lemurs and other semi-educational shows that are more for entertainment sake.
Top Educational Shows for Young Children
- Wild Kratts: This is for older kids (4-8), but is an entertaining show that teaches kids about different animals around the world. It is part animation and part real life with the Kratt Brothers exploring different places around the world and introducing wild animals.
- Number Blocks: Number Blocks is amazing at teaching kids math. My four year old is even learning how to add with the assistance of this show. I cannot tell you how much this is a fantastic show, highly recommend it…I just hope my kids continue to enjoy it! (Ages 4-8)
- StoryBots: This is such a family friendly show that is entertaining for my husband and I as well. StoryBots is a well produced show that answers kids questions about how to toilets work to why do I get sick? Very educational and informative for all ages.
- Blaze and the Monster Machines: This is one NickJr show I can get behind, Blaze teaches math and other principals while being entertaining about monster trucks. My boys loved this when they were younger (ages 3-5).
- Sid the Science Kid: Sid the science kid is a PBS show that introduces kids to a variety of science theories such as why do we get vaccinations and all about muscles. The boys love watching this show and my oldest watches it at school (ages 3-7).
Other Notable Shows:
- Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: good for younger kids learning about emotions and control, my boys never got into this show but I personally loved the message.
- Wambaland: Wambaland is a religious YouTube channel that teaches children about Jesus while being highly entertaining. While it is geared towards preschoolers, both of my boys love watching it and request it weekly!
- Word World: Another PBS show that is great about spelling but there are not many seasons of it so it gets repetitive. Very cute how the words create the different people and items though.
- Bluey: Bluey is not technically educational, but it brings up a lot of social situations and is a very family friendly show to watch together. My husband and I love watching this with the kids (it can teach you a thing or two about parenting too!).
- Blues Clues and You: Blues Clues tries to be educational, but in my opinion misses the mark. Regardless, it is an entertaining show that my boys enjoy watching (ages 3-5).
- Magic School Bus Rides Again: My oldest watches this show in school, it is fun to see the new version of a show I grew up watching. My boys haven’t gotten into it as much as I would have thought, but maybe when they are older they will enjoy it more.
- Blippi: My oldest loved Blippi on YouTube and now Blippi has a real television show and movies. Blippi has really taken off in the past few years, and it is a great show that teaches simple concepts in a fun way. My youngest doesn’t really enjoy Blippi, but I can tell you my oldest learned all about trucks and got help with learning his ABCs from watching Blippi!
I hope this list helps you discover new shows that your children will enjoy and that you will too! What are your kids favorite shows?
