Best Romantic Getaway in North Carolina: Half Mile Farm
Y’all our mini getaway to Highlands, North Carolina was so fun that it had to be a blog post. Drew and I take mini trips every winter around Western North Carolina (think Asheville and surrounding areas) as my in-laws take care of our boys at their home. We have stayed at the Inn at Biltmore, Grove Park Inn, Restoration in Asheville, Old Edwards and more…but our new favorite is Half Mile Farm in Highlands, North Carolina.
Admittedly, Half Mile Farm has been on my bucket list for a few years now. 3 years ago, Drew and I stayed at Old Edwards and loved the quaint little town of Highlands. The location is hard to beat being only a couple hours from Atlanta and an hour from my in-laws! Old Edwards is magical and we loved our time there, so immediately wanted to check out their Bed and Breakfast sister resort and yall it did not disappoint.
Old Edwards is situated at the end of Main Street in Highlands, making it easy to walk to different stores and restuarants. Half Mile Farm is located a couple miles off the Main Street making it more remote and intimate. As with Old Edwards, we were welcomed with a glass of champagne and a smile. The staff at Half Mile Farm is unmatched with their warmth, friendliness and laidback feel. It was such a welcoming and comforting feeling as soon as we walked in.
Originally, we booked a room in their main house. We never care too much about our room so opted for a more affordable room–however, we were pleasantly surprised when they treated us to an upgrade (as the pipes in our original room froze!). There are 36 rooms in the inn and we stayed in room 34, it was absolute magic with its own fireplace, balcony, living room area and huge bathroom. It was the suite life for sure!
HMF is located near a little pond and has a hot tub, pool, lawn with firepit, bar/restuarant and all the added features like cookies and coffee whenever you wish. The biggest perk of HMF is their complimentary happy hour and breakfast. There is a walking trail behind the property that Drew and I hiked along and a warm hot tub that we went into before heading to cocktail hour with fellow guests.
At cocktail hour, we were treated to champagne and Bloody Marys along with oysters on the half shell, charcuterie boards, mini apps and cheese boards while live music played and the fire rolled in the background. It was magic, y’all!
Following cocktail hour, we ventured to the fire pit where we met more couples from Greenville, South Carolina and chatted for a bit. We love going to the Highlands because you meet plenty of people from the Carolinas and North Georgia–so we always seem to make connections or have similarities with fellow guests. Following the fire, we had an amazing dinner at the JH bar with the most decadent tomato soup and huge homemade sandwiches. We talked for a long time with fellow guests and had such a fun time! Before heading up to bed, much later than originally anticipated, we spent some time by the warm fireplace in the main living room. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful evening.
In the morning, I woke up early to soak up as much time as possible. They put fresh coffee out at 6am which meant I was able to grab a cup and enjoy it by the fire before most woke up! I enjoyed reading my book (ate a cookie!) and caught the sunset before joining Drew back in our room. The only downfall of HMF (IMO which is not a bummer for most I know!), is that they don’t have a workout room, but they allow you to go to the Rec center if you wish. I decided to run around their driveway a few times to get some of my energy out for the day, it was pretty perfect for me! Following my run, we ate the most delicious breakfast of Corned Beef Hash and Runny Eggs before going back to the hot tub one last time!
We only had 24 hours at Half Mile Farm but we totally made the most of it! I am so glad that we enjoyed downtown Highlands before going to HMF and ventured back into town before heading out to get our boys. I highly highly recommend Half Mile Farm if you are looking for a short getaway with your spouse!
A couple other things to note: they do not allow children, only registered guests are allowed at HMF (meaning no visitors), no pets allowed either, and they have a shuttle that goes into town in the evening!
